Feature in The Eagle Tribune for "Emergence: A Haverhill Experience"
Check out this great preview for our upcoming show on May 30 in The Eagle Tribune! This performance is the second-ever on our Emergence Series where we showcase our operas in development. This Emergence performance features The Captivity of Hannah Duston by Grammy award winning composer Lansing McLoskey and New York Times Bestseller librettist Glen Nelson.
This opera deals directly with the controversial history of Hannah Duston’s abduction and gruesome escape from Native Abenaki in what is now known as Haverhill, MA. “The author of a 2015 historical narrative of the Hannah Duston book, ‘Massacre on the Merrimack,’ Jay Atkinson, of Methuen, said Duston was celebrated as a hero in her lifetime. Now, looking back on the events of 1697, he said, it is very difficult to determine whether what she did was heroic, justifiable or morally outrageous.”
We will allow our audience to consider this morally complex story alongside historical experiences at two different locations in Haverhill before we all gather together for a performance and Q&A with the composer and librettist. Tickets are still available at the link below:
